Fight Against Slavery on the Great Plains: Nebraska’s Underground Railroad

Learn about the issue of slavery in the U.S. during the 1850s, the controversy surrounding the Kansas-Nebraska Act, and how the issue affected people moving to the Nebraska Territory. The presentation describes the overall history of the Underground Railroad and how the movement became connected with the Great Plains, including how the Underground Railroad formed in Nebraska. You'll find out about specific sites in Nebraska where escaping enslaved persons most likely found refuge on their journey north to freedom.

Presented by Bill Hayes, Coordinator of the MRB Lewis & Clark Center Reenactors Corps in Nebraska City, NE and Independent Historian.

This program is part of the events leading up to the Humanities Nebraska Chautauqua event in Norfolk on August 2-3, and is sponsored by Humanities Nebraska. We appreciate their support!
