Meet Andrew Carnegie: The Richest Man in the World

Join us for this living history program and step back in time to the Gilded Age, the period of rapid industrialization from 1870-1900. You'll get to meet Andrew Carnegie, a once-impoverished child from Scotland who became the "richest man in the world." After his selling of United States Steel Company in 1901 and amassing a fortune equivalent to over $75 billion today, Andrew Carnegie devoted the rest of his life to philanthropy, specifically in the building and funding of public libraries. By the time of his death in 1919, he spent over 90% of his wealth on charitable projects and funded the building of 2,509 libraries, with locations in the US, the UK, and Canada.

Mr. Carnegie is portrayed by Professor Emeritus Thomas N. King of Doane College.

This program is part of the events leading up to the Humanities Nebraska Chautauqua event in Norfolk on August 2-3, and is sponsored by Humanities Nebraska. We appreciate their support!
